Matanzas Creek, Bennett Valley

I found myself at this winery when I was leaving downtown Santa Rosa, not far from the 101 but still a windy little adventure. You’ll be led to a magical place surrounded by mountain peaks on all sides, this enchanting feeling you’re entering a storybook setting. Bennett Valley is one of the most romantic AVA’s I’ve stumbled upon and the environment can be almost more alluring than the wines, which is to say a lot.

A must experience: the lavender garden, which sets it apart from it’s neighbors. Bring a yummy basket of all your favorites and come when the suns out, May-July preferably, when the lavender barn is open for business and your senses will be flooded with a picnic experience like no other, maybe throw in a game of Bocce ball if you feel so inclined. Make it a first stop and head down Bennett Valley Rd. to continue the fairytale, just be ready for the narrow and windy.
